Six decades of dedication to our community
Chorley And District Mencap Society was established in 1965 as the Chorley And District Society For Mentally Handicapped Children, reflecting the language and understanding of that era. Over the decades, we have evolved alongside society's growing awareness and respect for people with learning disabilities.
From our humble beginnings as a parent-led support group, we have grown into a vital community organization, officially registered as a charity (Number 225546) and dedicated to improving lives, championing rights, and creating opportunities for people with learning disabilities in Chorley and the surrounding district.
Today, we continue our mission with the same passion and commitment that inspired our founders, while embracing modern approaches to inclusion, empowerment, and support.
Chorley & District Mencap Society aims to improve the lives and opportunities of people with a learning disability, their families and carers by the provision of support and help. Together we will make sure their needs are met, we will speak out for equal rights and raise awareness and understanding.
We support everyone to grow, develop and reach their full potential through person-centered services and advocacy.
People with learning disabilities and their loved ones are at the heart of everything we do, shaping our services and priorities.
We treat everyone with dignity and respect, recognizing the unique value and contribution of each individual.
We are dedicated to improving lives and creating positive change in our community with unwavering commitment.
Every person with a learning disability deserves the same opportunities, rights and respect as everyone else in society.
We believe in breaking down barriers and creating a truly inclusive Chorley where everyone belongs and can participate fully.
We recognize that families and carers are essential partners in our work, and we're committed to supporting them too.
Our charity is governed by a dedicated Board of Trustees who volunteer their time, expertise, and passion to ensure we deliver the highest quality support to our community. Each trustee brings unique skills and perspectives, united by a shared commitment to our mission.
